On November 12, Her Term held its annual fundraiser, From Local to Lasting, bringing supporters together to celebrate women who were on the ballot the previous week and to invest in the next wave of female candidates. Held at a private home in the Ansley Park neighborhood of Atlanta, the event featured drinks, light bites, and an incredible keynote from Jen Jordan, whose 2017 special election marked a turning point in the state’s political landscape.
The event was not just as a social occasion, but a strategic step in building momentum to turn nearby wins into lasting change and support a more gender-equitable political future in Georgia. The evening’s speakers illustrated that advancing a women-first political infrastructure requires recognizing many different ways to win.
A win can look like…
Mary Ann Santos being the first Latina elected to the Georgia legislature from Henry County.
Omega Finney coming within 99 votes of a win as a first-time candidate for McDonough City Council.
Jen Jordan flipping a seat in the Georgia State Senate and breaking the Republican super-majority in 2017.
Kimberly Haase running twice unsuccessfully and winning on her third try to become the first African American woman elected to the Acworth City Council.
Danielle Bell getting a call from a recruiter asking if shed be interested in running for Georgia House of Representatives.
Akella Clore entering the Marietta city council race two and a half months before election day and coming in second place of three candidates.
A win can also look like…
Seventy-nine generous donors contributing over $50k in one extraordinary evening
Connecting with an organization and a community that understands the journey of women candidates in Georgia and provides support with accountability, resilience, and fundraising.
During this season of gratitude, Her Term is thankful for this diversity of wins. We are grateful to the candidates we get to work with for showing up authentically and entrusting us as we develop our novel approach to this work. We are grateful to our supporters for understanding that this is a long game—and the little wins count.
